The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea.
I’ve been longing for the sea lately. Not just the beach where the sand meets the sea but the wide open rolling waves sea. Maybe a little sweat will substitute for now. I have no reason for tears except tears of joy for being the happiest woman with the most wonderful family and amazing life: past, present and future. I went out whale watching with my parents and the kids awhile ago and it was just a tease. It’s not the same as being on your own boat navigating anywhere you want to go on the planet. But, it will have to do for now.
A couple of weeks ago Jim and I attended a lecture by Lin and Larry Pardey, longtime professional cruisers, about the cost and paperwork of cruising and it reminded me how much I love that lifestyle. Jim and I already knew most of what they talked about but, just as with my photography seminars, it was good to be in the same room with others who have the same interest in doing something wonderful.
As many of you may already know, Jim and I have a dream to take our kids sailing. We cruised from San Diego to the Marquesas, Tuamotus, Society Islands and up to Hawaii on a 38′ sailboat back in 2000 and returned to land to start a family. We keep saying “when the kids are old enough, we will go,” but I think the kids are old enough at any time and will adapt to life at sea. It’s more of a daunting dream than before taking into the considerations the wellfare of Merrik and Maliea. We both know in our hearts that it will be a way better experience for them (and us) than any schooling could possibly be so that isn’t even a consideration. The biggest consideration is having a seaworthy vessel and a few dollars to live off of with more waiting for us when we return.
It’s one of my long time dreams to sail the world, even before I met Jim, along with a successful photography business. I love how life has so many incredible things to embrace. I can’t encourage you enough to pick a dream and follow it. Tell everyone what you want and watch how the universe lays down each terrifying, thrilling and beautiful step for you along the way.
